why live in brainerd?

Those who live in Brainerd affectionately refer to it as a “big small town.” The population of Brainerd is just over 14,000 people but it is the principal city in the Brainerd Micropolitan which covers Crow Wing County and parts of Cass County; the Brainerd Micropolitan area has a population of more than 96,000 within 30-45 miles of Brainerd and is often referred to as the Brainerd Lakes Area.

The City of Brainerd is a thriving community with a variety of neighborhoods, a dynamic downtown, all the municipal services, an excellent public and private education system with several neighborhood schools, beautiful parks and trails, plus shopping and dining. The City of Brainerd’s economy relies heavily on its neighboring city, Baxter, MN.

As if often the case with 150-year-old cities, development happens nearby as cities grow, development needs and patterns change, and residential and consumer needs evolve, and Baxter is home to the rapidly expanding Minnesota Highway 371 and therefore much of the recent retail development. There is a mix of big-box and local retailers, restaurants and services that round out the living experience in Brainerd. The City of Brainerd also benefits from the surrounding communities of Crosby, Deerwood, East Gull Lake, Ironton, Lake Shore, Little Falls, Merrifield, Nisswa, and Pequot Lakes to support it with workforce and economic vitality.
